Blueway Trail Meeting
February 25, 2015

Town of DeKalb and Village of Richville to offer Oswegatchie Blueway Trail presentation on Thursday, March 4th

A public presentation on efforts to create a  Blueway Trail that would enhance and promote tourism and recreational opportunities along the Oswegatchie River will be held at the DeKalb Sunrise Apartments, Thursday, March 4th at 7 p.m.

The meeting, hosted by the Town of DeKalb and Village of Richville is aimed at updating the public on the status of the Oswegatchie Blueway Trail initiative, now in its early stages. The meeting will be mostly informational but, input from the public is welcome.

The first phase of the project is being funded through two separate $25,000 grants from the Empire State Development Corporation and the state Department of State, which were awarded last year. The trail would run from the river’s origin deep in the Adirondack Mountains to its convergence with the St. Lawrence River.

The City of Ogdensburg will serve as the lead agency as the Oswegatchie Blueway Trail plan moves forward. Ogdensburg Director of Planning and Development Andrea L. Smith will present a slide presentation of the first stage of the Oswegatchie Blueway Trail initiative which will involve networking with as many as 21 communities along the 130-mile-long river and setting up a regional steering committee comprised of two members from each participating community. The Blueway steering committee will hold regular meetings over the next 18 months, at the end of which time, a comprehensive marketing plan will be developed.  Once the Oswegatchie Blueway Trail marketing plan is completed, it will provide a comprehensive snapshot of what opportunities already exist along the river, and where improvements can be made to improve access for recreation and preservation.

If the plan meets state approval, the entire Oswegatchie River corridor from its head waters in the Five Ponds Wilderness area of the Adirondack Mountains, to its northern-most convergence with the St. Lawrence River, would be eligible to receive designation as an official  New York State Blueway Trail.

This designation will be instrumental in eventually securing additional funding that can be used to physically enhance infrastructure opportunities in communities along the river to make it more accessible and inviting for tourists and other outdoor enthusiasts. The development of the Oswegatchie Blueway Trail will also help connect the river to several designated scenic byways in the North Country, including the Maple Traditions Scenic Byway, the Olympic Byway, and the Seaway Trail Scenic Byway.
